The previously unpublished one-act melodrama Cairo, Shanghai, Bombay!—the first of Williams’s plays ever to be produced—opens the 2016 issue of the Tennessee Williams Annual Review, which features a special section devoted to film adaptations of the playwright’s work.
Scholars offer new insight into the underappreciated comedy Period of Adjustment; John Huston’s film adaptation of The Night of the Iguana; The Rose Tattoo’s uncomfortable move from stage to film; adaptations of Sweet Bird of Youth; the evolution of Val Xavier; and camp and cannibalism in Suddenly, Last Summer. Rounding out the 2016 volume are essays that explore Shakespeare in an unpublished precursor to A Streetcar Named Desire and that track Williams’s boundary-escaping stage directions.
