In 2006, Gerald Haessig was commissioned by the Historic New Orleans Collection to make a collection of sugarcane jewelry for the first exhibit launched after Hurricane Katrina. This HNOC exhibit was about the sugarcane trade from Santa Domingo into New Orleans. One of Gerald’s sugarcane pendants was gifted to First Lady Laura Bush when she visited our HNOC archives.
