The piece begins as clay or slip mixed in the artist’s studio, then is bisque fired and glazed or painted with non-fired mixed media. Pigments containing metallic particles are washed with acids to create the surface’s distinctive patina, while additions of holy water and fountain water gathered from churches and fountains in Rome, along with holy dirt from the shrine of Chimayo in New Mexico, bring the artist’s personal sense of place into the work.
