Richard Sexton photographs the industrial landscape along the lower Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans in Enigmatic Stream.
Drawing on two decades of work in the region, Sexton sets refineries and other large industrial structures against riverbanks, neighborhoods, and natural terrain, tracing the tension between commerce and life along the water. Essays by natural history writer Paul Schneider and photographic historian John H. Lawrence examine the places and photographic approach behind the images. The volume accompanied The Historic New Orleans Collection’s 2019 virtual exhibition of the same name; Sexton received the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ Michael P. Smith Memorial Award for Documentary Photography in 2014.
