In 2006, Gerald Haessig was commissioned by HNOC to create a sugarcane jewelry collection for the museum's first exhibition after Hurricane Katrina, exploring the sugarcane trade from Santo Domingo into New Orleans. One of Haessig's sugarcane pendants was gifted to First Lady Laura Bush during her visit to the HNOC archives.
