This purple ornament features New Orleans icons in an original design by Kitty Keller.
Cloisonné, meaning “to compartmentalize,” is an ancient decorative art introduced to China by western travelers in the 14th century. Skilled artisans shape fine copper wires into the design, solder them onto the ornament’s surface, and fill the resulting compartments with colored-glass enamel.
The ornament is fired at approximately 800°C, with additional layers of enamel and repeated firings as needed to build the finish. Each piece is then cooled and polished. This meticulous hand-crafted process creates subtle variations, so no two ornaments are exactly alike.
