Clay was a chef and member of several New Orleans fraternal and benevolent associations, including Young Men Olympia, Knights of Peter Claver, and the Elks Hall. He died on February 7, 1996, at age 73, and his jazz funeral followed a mass at Holy Ghost Catholic Church on Louisiana Avenue.
